Alice.
Wynonna sat on the steps and looked down at the bunny she had gotten her daughter. Alice was coming home. Alice and Doc. Five years ago she had sat right here on these steps and sent them away. Alice to save her life, and Doc to protect her. Protect him. Five years later, the cruse was broken. There was no more danger. No world ending chaos. No witches trying to raise a dead husband. No demons taking over bodies. She'd won. She was now the guardian of the garden, and there was nothing to fight against right now. Hadn't been for a little while. She'd waited to make sure nothing would come. That everything would be safe for them to return.
They were coming home today. Would be here any moment. Wynonna was waiting to hear the sounds of the car, and then she'd walked out there. Right now she was trying to imagine how different they might both be. Alice wouldn't have a clue who she was. She'd be so big now. Five years. She'd missed five years of her daughter's live. The first steps. first words. First so many things. Tears fell over her cheeks and she hugged the bunny to her, trying not to get it wet so it wouldn't be messy when Alice got here. This damn curse. The one she'd broken for her daughter. So Alice would never know this. It had cost her a price that was so high. Five years away from the two people she loved most.
Taking a deep breath, she tried to imagine what five years would do to Doc too. Would be still have that mustache? Did he still love his hat more then his boots? Did he still taste like whiskey and rye? Did his eyes still smile when he thought of her?
She'd also feared he'd moved on. Wynonna never kept in close touch. She hadn't wanted anything she was fighting to find a letter or hear a call and try to use it against her. She had often wondered if he'd find comfort with another. She wouldn't blame him. Five years was a long time to be along. She knew it because she'd not sought out another. When she'd tried it hadn't felt right. She'd missed Doc and ended up going home alone. Never tried again. No one was him.
During the month that she had waited to make sure nothing came, Wynonna had taken the time to decorate Waverly's old room for Alice. Jeremy had helped using something called feng shui, which she understood about as much as she did everything else he babbled about, but the room looked good. Soft purple twinkle lights hung over a new bed. The walls has been redone to make the room brighter. It has been hard taking down Waverly's room, but after so many years she knew Waverly would want Alice to have it.
Looking down at the bunny, Wynonna brushed some of it's fur, and kept waiting for Doc and Alice. The Hollidays.

darlin' I'M EVERYBODY'S TYPE 5 years. 5 damn years. It felt both like an eternity and yet went by quickly at the same time. Truth was, it was far too long. The guilt of leaving never at ease. The guilt of not being here to help break the curse, strong. He hadn't intended to be gone that long. He just planned on ensuring Alice was safe with Gus and then had every intention of returning. That is, until he found out that BBD was after her too. It made her life endangered, and Doc knew that he would never forgive himself -- and Wynonna would never forgive him -- if he failed in protecting their daughter. So he stayed. Day after day. Week after week. Month after month. Year after year. Until they finally received the news: the curse was broken. It was safe to come home, and this was indeed their home.
As he was pulling into Homestead, it looked the same and yet he felt he hadn't seen it in a century. He could feel his heart beating faster, wondering just how much things had truly changed. Every day, he felt the fear of something happening to Wynonna. Of not being here to protect her, to help her. Of Waverly. Jeremy. Nicole. Everyone. But Wynonna . . . was the woman who held his heart. Even after all this time. How different was she? How was she? Was she . . with anyone else? So many questions, the latter one more selfish and at the same time, knew he would have to explain that to their daughter. He did his damnedest to make sure that Alice knew who her mother was. Night after night, stories of her, and Alice loved hearing them. Hearing about the fearless heroine who saved people's lives. How she had saved his life; many times.
But in parking the car, and seeing her, he felt his throat dry. His heart continuing to beat with anticipation and nervousness. He figured he looked the same. Mostly. He still had the hat, but he knew his dress had to be slightly more modern to blend in. Gus tried to convince him to get rid of the moustache so that he would not be so recognizable for those looking for him, but he refused. They compromised on a beard to help make him less obvious. "There she is, Papa!" Alice exclaimed. Doc smiled, turning his head as much as he could to look at their baby girl. "There she is," he stated. So much time had passed. So much time that a mother was absent from her daughter and vice versa. He knew he could not take the place of a mother and he was so glad that now, Wynonna and her would have a chance to be together. Finally together.
With that, he stepped out of the car, opening the door and helping Alice out of it too. She stayed close to him, but he knew she wasn't afraid. Not in the sense of seeing a stranger. For so long, it had just been the two of them -- and Gus of course -- but now, it could finally be the three of them. With Alice's hand in his, they walked side by side, stopping at the bottom of the stairs as Doc took his hat off and held it in his free hand. Looking at her. She looked so damn beautiful and he finally felt that unceasing pain in his heart, ease. For the first time since she had asked him to take their daughter away. "Wynonna," he greeted, trying to keep the emotion from his voice but she knew him well enough to know . . . that it was there.

Alice.
Wynonna heard the car and almost didn't get up. Moving like she was underwater, Wynonna walked slowly out on the porch and watched the car come to a stop. Watched Doc--Doc. He got out of the car and she felt her knees shake. He looked drifferent, but in all the good ways. A bread covering his face. Clothes looking like they were from this century. Time away from here did him good.
He got Alice out of the car, and Wynonna thought about throwing up over the rail. She felt so nervious about--Alice! About seeing her for the first time. So was so big! Walking on her own! Oh shit! She was going to talk too! Wynonna knew she should walk down the steps but she couldn't make her legs worked as Doc and Alice walked hand and hand. Doc said her name but for the moment couldn't look away from the most perfect little girl she'd ever seen. The hair, the face, and oh! The eyes! Perfect. How did this perfect child come from her?
She wanted to look at Doc and see him up close. See how five years treated him, but for the moment--there was only Alice. Not because her heart didn't love him but because--Alice. He had been the only one she trusted with the most important thing in this world. He'd done it. He'd kept her safe. Stepping down the steps slowly, trying not to trip, Wynonna knelt down in front of the little girl and offered the slightly scrunched up bunny with a wet spot on it's head--damn it! "Hi," She whispered, then cleared her through. "I'm---" Mama "I'm Wynonna."

darlin' I'M EVERYBODY'S TYPE Doc knew this was a lot; for the both of them. But he also had no idea how to ease them into it. Perhaps there was no easing. It was not as if any of them had been in this position before. On the one hand, he knew he should give them a moment alone. On the other, he worried that it may be too much for Alice or Wynonna. Alice was an incredibly smart girl, but she was still a child. Still struggled to understand the complexities of what kept her and her mother apart. Even in his stories, he had to filter a great deal of it to keep her from the dark truths of this world.
Alice looked up at Doc and he gave a slight nod, as the little girl slowly took the bunny. A whispered "Thank you," following the actions as she looked at it, clearly admiring it. Wynonna then introduced herself and Doc felt his heart swell. This was a moment he had longed for for so long. For Alice to know her mother. For Wynonna to know her daughter. Alice looked at her, still holding the bunny in one hand and Doc's hand in the other. "You don't want me to call you mama?" The way Doc spoke of Wynonna making her a known figure, though the concept and role of a mother in her life was one that she was unfamiliar with. Hopefully, not for long.

The perfect little girl took the sad bunny and held it. Then she asked about calling her Mama. Wynonna closed her eyes as tears broke over her face, and her hand reached out to grab what she could of Doc. (she was pretty sure it was just his pants, but it could have been his arm). Forcing them open to look at Alice, Wynonna nodded her head. "I'd like that." She'd loved that. "I'd liked that a lot! I just wasn't sure if you'd like it."
Her hand that was death gripping her baby daddy reached slowly out to touch Alice's hair, and then slowly pulled back. "You're so beautiful." She told her, wiping her tears off her cheeks. Looking up at Doc, Wynonna stood up slowly and looked at his face. Doc. Stepping forward she wrapped her arms around him in a tight hug. "Thank you," for taking care of Alice. For staying away. For being here when she asked. For just being Doc. "I've missed you," She told him.

darlin' I'M EVERYBODY'S TYPE He watched the tears fall down her cheeks, and felt her hand upon him. He damn well knew this wasn't going to be easy and wish he had a better idea of what to do. How to help. Alice looked at Wynonna, giving a small nod as she held the bunny against her chest. "Papa says I look like you." Doc smiled proudly at that. "And I thank God she does, every day." An image of her mother. Even her personality was that of Wynonna's. Clearly, some personalty traits were genetic. When Wynonna reached up to hug him, Doc wrapped an arm around her, feeling Alice slowly let go of his hand so that he could wrap the other as well.
He closed his eyes, the feeling of holding her far better than the hundreds of times he'd imagined it. "I missed you too," he said in a quiet voice. Letting the moment linger, he regrettably lowered his arms looking at her once again. They had a lot to talk about. "Why don't you do go on inside, and I'll bring our things in." Perhaps it was presumptuous of him to assume his things be brought inside, but truth was, he hadn't been separated from Alice since he took her out of the Ghost River Triangle, and had no intention of starting now. "Is Waverly inside?" He asked. For he'd told Alice stories of not just her mother, but her aunt too. Though Doc longed to see her, he also knew it may be overwhelming for Alice . . . and truth was, Wynonna and Alice needed some time together alone first.

Alice said she looked line her Mama, and Wynonna broke from the hug a little to look down at her her daughter. "Except for your Papa's eyes. You thankfully got them from him." Doc too broke from the hug and told her the more scariest thing--Go on in with Alice! Her hand tightened on his arm. "It can wait. You can come in too." She wasn't ready to be alone with Alice--Since Alice was born at Shorties she had only need alone once with her. The night she put her in Doc's arms and watched him leave.
Keeping her death grip on his arm, Wynonna looked back down at Alice. "Would you like to come in? I have a room made for you." Wynonna almost lifted her hand out to Alice, but hesitated for a moment, before finally offering her hand to the little girl. She knew it was a risk, but she wasn't going to be upset if Alice wasn't ready.

darlin' I'M EVERYBODY'S TYPE His eyes. As he thought earlier, fortunate that it was all she had gotten from him for her beauty surely came from her mother. Upon his suggestion, he could see the underlying panic in Wynonna -- most likely at the thought of being alone with their daughter. He would take that as a no, Waverly was not home. He nodded reassuringly as he watched Wynonna start to offer her hand, change her mind and then finally extend it.
He softly smiled, looking down at Alice as she slowly reached up to take Wynonna's hand too. There was hesitation, from both of them, but it made sense of course. "Papa says this is my home. My actual home." Doc had always wanted her to feel connected to Purgatory, even though he had no idea when they would return. He knew that they would, one day. He had faith in Wynonna that she would break the curse. "Will I have an actual room?" She may not understand the meaning of it but Doc couldn't help but smile. "Why don't you go on in and find out," he encouraged, waiting for Wynonn and Alice to go inside before he promptly followed, and closed the door behind them.

Alice took her hand and Wynonna led her in. Once they were in Doc shut the door. "I should warn you. I uhh, I don't live alone." There was a dog laying on the run, and he got up to walk over. Wynonna bent down and reached her hand out to rub his ears. Looking up at Doc sheepishly, she then looked back at Alice. "This is John Henry. My dog. He lives here too." Because she missed Doc, and she needed someone to be around here after Waverly moved in with Nicole. Jeremy came and crashed here for a while, but he too moved in with Robin. At which point she got a dog.
"Do you like dogs?" She asked looking at Alice, holding her hand while petting the German shepherded. "He likes little girls. He likes his nosed rubbed. But I warn you . . . he loves kisses most of all." It was as soft as she had ever spoken to anyone, and there wasn't any humor there. Because she wasn't sure what to expect with Alice.. "If you want, you can take him up stairs. He knows which room is your room."

darlin' I'M EVERYBODY'S TYPE She said she didn't live alone and Doc knew he should have expected as such. But. . . he also knew that surely, the other person wasn't here. That, was one thing he had not explained to Alice. The potential of another male figure in her life. It wasn't something he exactly wanted to think on. But when a dog emerged, Doc slightly chuckled at the sight of the excited dog. "Puppy!" Alice exclaimed excitedly, already starting to pet the animal. Hearing what Wynonna had named him caused him to smile as he looked at her.
"Hey! That's my papa's name," he said with amusement. "And a far better one than Plucky." Which was a dog he had in his childhood; a story he'd once told Wynonna. The canine seemed to ease the mood some, for Alice was quite excited about him. "OK!" She hurriedly followed the dog up the stairs, glad that at least for the moment, she was adjusting well to these new surroundings. With her upstairs, it gave Doc and Wynonna a moment and well, he knew there was a lot to talk about. Truth was, he didn't even know where to start. "You look good," he told her. Not meant to be flirtatious but more, stating that she looked strong -- as she always did. Healthy. That was important, considering he couldn't see it for himself for 5 years.

Alice seemed to like John Henry, which was good because Wynonna had become attached to them both in the limited time she had known them both. "Is it? I might have known that." She joked, when Alice said that was Doc's name. Alice took off up the steps, and Wynonna watched her as they disappeared. The only door open up there was Alice's room, so she knew that Alice and John Henry would find the room with ease. Jeremy had promised she'd like it. He said all little girls like purple. Robin agreed. Waverly agreed. Even Haught agreed.
Turning her face she looked at Doc. "Hi," Wynonna whispered. Doc told her she looked good, and it felt natural to smile, even as a few more tears filled her eyes. Reaching up to touch his face, which now looked different under the beard. "You do too." Stepping forward she again hugged him. Not in thanks this time, but in being glad to see him. "I'm so glad you're home." She hoped he thought of this as home, and that he planned to stay. If not she could go wherever he wanted. Nothing held her here any more. After a long lingering hug, Wynonna pulled back just enough to rest her face there with his. Was this ok? She hoped so because she wasn't ready to let him go.

darlin' I'M EVERYBODY'S TYPE Doc saw the tears in her eyes, hearing the tone of her voice and he was quite glad when she hugged him because he knew that if she didn't . . . he would have. Their first actual hug of reunion. Unguarded in front of Alice. He closed his eyes, holding her close to him as he took in a slow breath. Her familiar scent. The familiar feel of her in his arms. Yes. This was what he had longed for, for so long. Every day for five years.
When she drew back enough to look at him, their faces touching, he raised a hand to brush away a few tears that had fallen from her eyes. "Me too," he told her. He was so happy to be home, with her. He wanted to ask so much, wanted to say so much, but he just let the silence linger. "Not a day went by where I did not think of you." Hell, not even a moment went by where he wasn't thinking of her. But he wanted to know that. That the distance he felt from her had been . . . agnozing. Eased only by their beloved daughter, and knowing that keeping her safe was the most important thing; and because, it was what Wynonna had asked him to do that very day, so many years ago.

Doc hugged her back, and the feeling of his arms around her made her knees weak. Keeping their faces touching he brushed away her tears--like he had done so many times before. Her hand that touched his cheek moved over his lips and jaw, feeling the bristles there. "Every day." She thought of him, "And the nights were the worst." Laying there alone, with nothing taking her mind off how much she missed them both. She lost a lot of sleep laying there missing them. Needing them.
"It's over now," that the they were all dead. It had taken her five years, but it was over now. No more curse. No more danger. "She'd safe. You kept her safe." And with no curse, there was no heir. Alice wasn't wanted by anyone but her parents. No one would seek to harm her.

darlin' I'M EVERYBODY'S TYPE Yes. Nights were definitely the worst. When the day was at an end, and he was left alone with his thoughts, they more often than not drifted to her. Thinking of whether Wynonna was ok, and fighting every temptation and urge to call her. To hear her voice. To see her face. "They were," he agreed with her, knowing how much she must have longed to hold their daughter in those moments. Looking at her, he kept his arms around her, taking in every detail of her features that he'd sorely missed seeing.
"I wish I could have kept you safe too," he told her. He would forever wish he could have somehow protected them both. That it didn't have to be an either or. "But you did," he said proudly. "You broke the curse." He knew she would be able to do it. She was the strongest person he knew and he could only imagine how hard she had fought these past several years to break it, and ensure the safety of their daughter and all of Purgatory. "You saved her." Not just be sending her away, but also by making sure that Alice never had to face this curse when she turned 27 years old. For that, there were not enough words of gratitude that Doc could offer.

Doc's words were ones that she'd tried to tell herself, but had never completely believed. That sending her daughter away, and sending him away had been the right choice. When she'd left Waverly here, thinking it was better for her, Waverly had been hurt and unset. Wynonna had long feared that Alice would hold a bitterness in her heart over it. Hearing Doc tell her he still thought it was the right thing to so, that she'd done it right, was heavy on her heart, and light at the same time.
Squeezing her eyes closed, she moved her face closer to bury it in his neck for a moment, just feeling him hold her, before pulling back to again rest her face with his. "You did keep me safe." She told him, knowing he would never be able to understand how much knowing he was out there helped her do this job. One that was now over. She hadn't been sure what would come next. After working so hard for so long, what did she do after this? After killing the seven she had gone a little wild--even for her. Doc had been there and never judged. This time, she knew what came next. What she wanted. Tilting her face she softly kissed his lips.
